Mahjong Guided Play FAQs

Guided Play FAQ

Whether you’re new to American Mahjong or looking to sharpen your skills, Mahjong Guided Play offers a structured, supportive way to practice. Here are answers to the most common questions about these sessions.

1. What is Mahjong Guided Play?

Mahjong Guided Play is a class-style session where players practice real game scenarios under the guidance of an instructor. Unlike open play, the instructor provides tips, demonstrates strategies, and helps players understand the reasoning behind decisions during the Charleston, tile selection, and hand-building phases.

Think of it as hands-on coaching in a relaxed, social setting.

2. Who is Guided Play for?

  • Beginners who want extra support beyond Mahjong 101 before joining a game or attending open play
  • Players looking to build confidence and improve decision-making to
  • Anyone who wants to practice hand-building, card reading, and Charleston strategies with guidance

No matter your skill level, Guided Play is tailored to help you progress at your own pace.

3. How is Guided Play different from Mahjong 101?

During Guided Play, we are only focused on gameplay rather than step-by-step instruction. You’ll focus on:

  • Reading the American Mah Jongg card efficiently
  • Recognizing multiples, suits, and patterns quickly
  • Charleston strategies and safe tile passing
  • Picking, discarding, and managing your hand during real gameplay
  • Tips for tile efficiency and maximizing winning opportunities

You’ll get real-time feedback and guidance while playing, so you can immediately apply what you learn.

4. Do I need my own set?

While having your own mahjong set can help you practice at home, it’s not required. The instructor provides sets and tiles during the session, so all you need to bring is curiosity and enthusiasm.

If you’re interested in purchasing your own set, check out our Discounts page for exclusive savings on the best tiles and accessories from the most popular mahjong brands.

5. How long is a session?

Guided Play sessions typically last 2 hours, providing enough time for multiple rounds of play, hands-on instruction, and Q&A.

6. Can I play if I haven't taken a class yet?

It is strongly recommended that you take a Mahjong 101 class or understand the basics of gameplay before attending.  Guided Play is designed to support both beginners and players who want to strengthen their skills. The instructor will give pointers, answer questions, and help you understand each phase of the game as you play, but will not be recapping the basics of tile recognition, card reading, or setup.

7. When is the next session? How do I sign up?

See our Guided Play schedule and sign up online through our Upcoming Events page. Guided Play sessions are small and interactive, so spaces are limited.

8. What should I bring?

  • Yourself (and a willingness to learn!)
  • Your NMJL card (loaners available if you don’t have one)
  • Notebook or phone for notes

9. How is Guided Play different than Open Play?

Open play is casual and player-driven, which is great for socializing and practicing, but Guided Play includes instruction, strategy tips, and hands-on feedback. It’s the perfect bridge between learning the rules and confidently playing in real games or tournaments.

10. Why should I try Guided Play?

Guided Play accelerates learning by combining practice with feedback. You’ll leave the session feeling more confident in your card reading, Charleston strategy, and overall gameplay. Plus, it’s a fun, social way to meet other players and enjoy the game.
